Introduction

The 'Central Hindi Institute' is a higher education and research institute under the 'Ministry of Education' (formerly known as the Ministry of Human Resource Development) of the Government of India. According to the guidelines of Article 351 of the Constitution, in order to make Hindi strong and active, to give an organized and mature form to Hindi teaching-training, Hindi language analysis, comparative study of language and the creation of teaching material etc. through various educational, cultural and practical research, in 1961, the then 'Ministry of Education and Social Welfare' of the Government of India established the 'Central Hindi Institute' in Agra city of Uttar Pradesh.

The main work of the Hindi Institute is to organize educational programs related to the Hindi language, to conduct research work and to play a leading role in the promotion and propagation of Hindi. Initially, the main work of the Hindi Institute was to train qualified, competent and effective Hindi teachers for 'non-Hindi speaking areas' to teach at training college and school levels, but later, keeping in mind the educational promotion and development of Hindi, the Institute expanded its vision and work area, under which it started conducting basic scientific research programs related to subjects like Hindi teaching-training, Hindi language-related research, linguistics and comparative literature etc. and also started the work of preparing educational courses, educational material, teacher directories etc. of various levels. With such a broad vision and organizing programs, the scope of the Hindi Institute became extremely wide and vast. Due to all these programs, the Hindi Institute gained fame and recognition not only in India but also at the international level.

In order to make the all India form of Hindi language of equal level and also to give a strong base to the teaching of Hindi language throughout India, on 19 March 1960, the then 'Ministry of Education and Social Welfare' of the Government of India formed an autonomous body 'Central Hindi Teaching Board' and on 1 November 1960, this institute was registered in Lucknow.

The Government of India entrusted the 'Central Hindi Teaching Board' with the full responsibility of running the 'All India Hindi Training College'. On January 1, 1963, the name of the All India Hindi Training College was changed to 'Central Hindi Teaching College'. Later, in the meeting of the Council held on October 29, 1963, the name of the Central Hindi Teaching College was also changed to 'Central Hindi Institute'. The headquarters of the Central Hindi Institute is in Agra. Apart from the headquarters, it has 8 centers –

Delhi, 2. Hyderabad, 3. Guwahati, 4. Shillong, 5. Mysore, 6. Dimapur, 7. Bhubaneswar, 8. Ahmedabad

The main activities which were determined by the Government of India at the time of formation of the 'Mandal' are being carried out with devotion from then till today.
